I have mentioned this before, but in case you missed it, Matt Quinn recently started a podcast inspired by the Sing Yonder book series. Like the books, each episode looks at each song in the Roud index in order, and Matt has a chat about the history of the song with an academic or expert, and then discusses the song from a musical perspective with a performer. It’s a really great deep dive into folk song, and Matt has just finished season one, songs 1-10 in the Roud Index. It’s well worth checking out, if you haven’t already.
As well as going through the index (and that’s going to take a while, as there are over 40,000 songs, and Steve Roud is still adding to the list) Matt will also be producing bonus episodes, chatting to other people in the folk industry about, you guessed it, folk music. The latest episode happens to be one of those bonus episodes, and that person in the folk industry is me! I had a great hour talking to Matt, and we discussed the latest book, and the songs therein. It’s available wherever you find podcasts - here’s a direct link:
In The Roud - Bonus Episode with Karl Sinfield.
And now, after that bit of excitement, it’s back to work for me, as I look at Roud 81, The Laird o Logie, coming soon to this very substack.
